Five go to Aviation School

The first week of the April school holidays sees Hokowhitu Scout Den converted into the Scouts NZ National Aviation School. This year 42 youth from across New Zealand spent a week (yes – seven full days) learning about all things ar

ound aviation. Two of our leaders (Mike & Richard) attended to gain their Aeronautical Charge Certificates, and Kitty returned for kicks and to help with the youth.

(Emma turned up for a paltry two nights after all the hard work was done and just in time for the fancy dinner.)picture of nine air scouts.

All eight (nine) worked their socks off and will attest that the school (NOT a camp!) is hard, hard work, but worth every second. It culminates in a day of flying and youth have the chance to experience taking the controls of various aircraft. Throw in a visit to RNZAF Base Ohakea and Massey School of Aviation and you can gain a taste of why it’s such an amazing opportunity.

All five of our Air Scouts achieved all eight aviation personal challenge badges and received the restricted ‘Air Achievement’ award strip. Look out for it on the top of their right sleeve.

If your Scout will be 12 + next April, perhaps they would like to give it a go! Don’t forget that Scouts NZ runs a variety of National Schools. Details are here.

Air Scouts Take Off

scout with thumbs upWhat a crazy couple of terms Waikanae Air Scouts have had! Since their first meeting in October 2017 they have done so much.  A small selection is helping with community drives, hiking, camping, staying out in the wilds of the Tararuas, riding bikes, and of course, learning heaps about aviation. What else have they been doing? Oh yes, having heaps of FUN!

On Sunday they finally took to the skies in a state-of-the-art glider with Gliding Manawatu, who kindly allowed us to totally take over their airfield for the day. Seventeen Air Scouts and six leaders took off in style and many took the opportunity to take the controls for achild in glider looking happy. time whilst in the air. Everyone had a positive experience of non-powered flight.

We’ve got some pictures here, (doesn’t the look on their faces say it all?!) but for more check out their Facebook group.

If you know a young person aged 11 – 14 who’s keen on Aviation, be sure to give them a call on 0223074553 or complete our contact form here.

The Wonderful Waikanae Show!

Raffle winner.

Our Air Scouts were out and about at the Waikanae Show this weekend, and one of their number was determined to complete fundraising for the forthcoming National Scout Aviation School in April.

Amelia spent the entire show selling raffle tickets to a meat raffle.  She was lucky enough to have had the prize donated from a local family. She sold, sold, sold all day and is well on her way to the National School!

The raffle was drawn by Beach FM’s Corrin Crisp, and the lucky winner was red 39 which was Leticia Armstrong from Paraparaumu.  Air Scout leader Kitty and Amelia delivered the prize to a delighted Leticia that afternoon.

Thanks to everyone at the Waikanae Show and our awesome community for all your support.

Founder’s Day Awards

Awesome news this week as we discovered our very own group leader, Karen Maddocks, was awarded the prestigious Medal of Merit by Scouts NZ.  Special Service Awards recognise an outstanding contribution made by an adult to Scouting. Great news, Karen, well deserved and we’re all delighted for you!

We must also give a great big BRAVO to Glyn Wilman on achieving the Chief Scout Award, and Holly Darton for the attainment of Queen’s Scout. Great to see!

Happy Campers Group Up

Group photo camp

Phew, what a weekend!  But didn’t we all have a blast?! Everyone is recovering from our awesome group camp that saw our Keas, Cubs, Land and Air Scouts come together helped with fab catering by our Venturers and overlooked by our intrepid leaders.

We made shelters in the bush,  played water games, built stuff, played games, performed hilarious skits at campfire, tried to get some sleep and finished in style with our founder’s day waterslide.

What are you waiting for?! Contact us to find out how you can join in!

Come Fly With Us!

It’s official! You heard it here first! Our Air Scouts will take to the skies in March with Gliding Manawatu.  Naturally it’s not all about the flying, to take part they MUST attend the lesson on theory of flight on 15th March at the ATC Unit in Paraparaumu.

An email will be sent out shortly with further information.

Fee Increase

New Zealand currency

We have received final confirmation today regarding the fee increases from National Office. Our committee met on Wednesday night and have agreed the following:-

Fees for Keas, Cubs, Land and Air Scouts – $80 per term

Venturers – $55.00 per term

Leaders members – $15 per term

Committee members – $50 per term

There are further increases planned for the next two years.

There is an option to pay a weekly amount throughout the whole year to reduce the impact of the increase, however this is by arrangement only and obviously the later this is set up the greater the amount required to meet the full amount. Anyone wishing to take this option must contact us in person to arrange this.

If you are unable to pay fees, please let us know as soon as you can.

We understand that this is a significant increase and would like to assure you that we are doing what we can to cover our costs with fundraising and applications for grants. If you can help us in any way we would appreciate you getting in touch!

Don’t forget to let us know if your Scout is attending our Group Camp and National Mudslide on 17th – 18th February at Tatum Park. This will cost $30.00 per Cub / Scout and we need numbers as soon as we can to help with planning. If you’ve not had your invitation please let your leaders know.
